ART FOR TEENS AND ADULTS

FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED – ART IS FOR EVERYONE

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - LUCY FRADKIN

During her stay as EEAC’s artist in residence for the summer of 2009 Master collagist Lucy Fradkin will lead workshop participants on an exciting artistic journey. Lucy Fradkin has received the 2005 Artist Fellowship-Drawing as well as several Artist-in-Residence Grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She has exhibited extensively worldwide, most recently at Lesley Heller Gallery, NY, Lehman College Art Gallery, NY and Smithsonian Museum National Portrait Gallery, Washington DC. Recent lectures include Hunter College, NY, several programs in Rome, Italy, and Islip Art Museum, NY. Inspired by the sacred and folk arts and the vanishing art of hand-painted signage Lucy Fradkin creates figurative works in oil and gouache at times incorporating collaged decorative elements.

  ARTIST STATMENT

Replete with references to the ancient frescoes and mosaics of the Etruscans, Romans and Byzantines, my paintings on paper capture a timeless moment through a contemporary eye. Inspired by the sacred and folk arts and the vanishing art of hand-painted signage, I create portraits of diverse individuals, gathering images when traveling and at home in New York City. For the past 8 years I have concentrated on a series of figurative works painted in oil, gouache or acrylic gouache on paper. At times I incorporate collaged decorative elements from a variety of sources including old catalogs, field guides and vintage books into the work. I use color and pattern to evoke emotion and tell stories of daily life where the viewer is drawn into an intimate world. My work is clearly inspired by the traditional, but the impact of personal history is evident in the quiet presentation of issues of gender and race.

This workshop series is recommended for in service credit for teachers. Documentation necessary will be provided by EEAC.

ARTHUR SIMMS LECTURE

Arthur Simms’ art is rich with associations to his hybrid autobiography, American and Jamaican folk culture, music, art history and world culture, his human-scale sculptures radiate a playful and serious inquiry into concepts of origin and transformation. Simms’ art is to a large extent a product of bi-culturalism, a merging of my Jamaican heritage and American education.

Through their formal rigor and the poetic associations that the recycled elements trigger, the sculptures narrate stories of personal identity, family, spiritual and physical journeys, erotic tensions and nostalgia for home. Bedsprings, empty bottles, machines, children's worn-out toys and other discards of our material lives take on a new world of symbolic meanings, powered by my unconscious and pent-up energy unleashed from objects that, to a less sensitive eye, might appear to be junk. The technique of assemblage has a distinguished history in fine and folk art.

The Modernist Marcel Duchamp's use of ordinary objects as "readymade" works of art holds a special place in my complex process. Arthur Simms’ own art is inspired by Surrealism's uses of automatism, disjunction and reliance on the unconscious. Although based largely on intuition, his process does not exclude formal decisions. He also taps into non-Western cultures and belief systems such as Australian Aboriginal art, Haitian, African, as well as cross gender lines by using domestic craft techniques of sewing and embroidery usually associated with women's work. His sculptures are usually wrapped in rope and or wire.

The laborious action of binding creates spiritual and physical links that construct his own cultural history. Incorporating a wide range of materials and mediums, the work explores themes of life's experiences. Over the past two decades, he has been working on a body of sculptures and drawings that evokes memory, loss and cross cultural ties. In his words,” I am summarizing this epoch as it relates to me, my heritage and people's universal commonness. The work as a group, through object and thought, embodies power and history”.

Mr. Simms has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Rome Prize Fellowship, Academy Award for Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Creative Capital Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, Residency Award from the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency Fellowship, Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and Pollock-Krasner Grant. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including representing the country of Jamaica in its first ever Pavilion in the 49th Venice Biennial in 2001. Recent exhibition venues include The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Neuberger Museum, American Academy of Arts and Letters, P.S.1 MOMA, American Academy in Rome, Queens Museum, Islip Art Museum and a commissioned work in Prospect Park.
