The EEAC Carriage House….What’s Going On In There? The Grand Opening of the Carriage House was held on September 8, 2007. The day started with an Open House and was followed by a very elegant barbecue in the evening. Since that time, programs are quickly being developed. We are looking forward to being 100% “up and running” in a relatively short time. Art Classes The upstairs studio is the site for an exhibition of the work of EEAC members on a rotating basis, featuring the work of one artist at a time. We are now accepting applications from EEAC members who would like to show a small body of work in the Carriage House. Selections will be made using a random drawing. Artists will be responsible for hanging and removing their work, as well as developing promotional materials. We will help you with the process. The number of pieces to be hung will be at the discretion of the artist keeping in mind the size of the space and a professional presentation. All work must be either neatly framed or on gallery edged canvas. Because the room is a multi-use space, we cannot accept sculptures. African Drumming, led by Daniel Bailey, frequently meets on Tuesday evenings in the Carriage House. Nothing else happens at that time, for good reason! A dozen djembe drums can really make some noise! Non-instructional Life Drawing takes place Thursday evenings under the direction of our good friend Liz Malunowicz. For only $10 per session 5:30-8:30 pm, artists can spend the evening drawing draped and nude models. Bring your own easel and supplies. For info on the schedule, contact Liz at emalunowicz@yahoo.com or 631-678-7487. Music in a big way. Magical things are happening in the recording studio according to George Cork Maul. Students have been laying tracks of their own music with other students, making extraordinary collaborations and introducing our students to the joy of making music together in the 21st century. We’re looking forward to more use of the studio by the public for rehearsal and recording. The Visiting Artist Program gets underway! “Mark Yodice is one of Long Island's most promising young musicians. A solo guitarist, Mark writes and plays music that both stuns and settles the listener's heart. In performance, his original compositions and impressionistic improvisations are mixed with the music of the world's finest contemporary classical composers, creating a transcendent, playful, diverse and compelling sonic landscape.” –David Hodge, guitarnoise.com Much thanks to Stephen Longmire, Gina Gilmour and Janet Culbertson for sharing their extensive collective experiences as artists in residence to help with the program development. Applications for the visiting artist program will be available soon on the website. We now have a space big enough to hold a good-sized group. The Carriage House is a great place for artists’ workshops and we’ve had two sold-out sessions already. Our thanks to Peter Marcelle for his consultations with artists, providing professional advice on approaching galleries for consideration. Our artists said “Fantastic!” and “Peter clarified things I had known in my heart, but hadn’t listened to.” And, to Alain Khadem for his lecture on Legal Issues for the Visual Artist. We heard, “Wow, What a professional presentation!” and “So much information – and very helpful!” We’ve also held the training session for The Teeny Award judges and a Professional Development Day for EEAC faculty, teaching artists and public school teachers who were invited to learn from Arts Integration Specialist, Glenn McClure, Composer and Faculty member George Cork Maul and artist Mike Killelea. In the upcoming months look for more improvements in the Carriage House. With Community Development Block Grant Funds, we’ll be installing much needed storage cabinets and work surfaces, making the space user friendly for artists. The grounds will see some site improvements as well. We’re still raising money for equipment, furnishings and programming. The Carriage House is an Empire Development Zone project, which provides NYS tax credits for donations of $1,000 and more. We have numerous naming opportunities, which include: Carriage House $25,000 |
