As a local East End artist, one of the subjects painter Bryan Gutman frequently returns to is the local landscape. Bryan’s keen eye for color has always inspired him to paint Autumn scenes usually around tributaries, ponds or creeks. Since the foliage closest to the water changes the earliest, he starts as soon as mid-September visiting his favorite spots to monitor their autumnal changes. A local site like Munn’s Pond in Hampton Bays, for example, only holds water for part of the year, making the pond view change constantly. Bryan completes most of his compositions in “plein air” or on location while surrounded by the sounds of nature and natural light. More fleeting beauty of bright reds, oranges and golden yellows are interpreted with exuberance in much of his work. Bryan has remained committed to painting since completing his MFA degree from Brooklyn College in 1984. He has a large studio next to his house in Patchogue, which he shares with his ceramicist wife Tina Folks, but most of his paintings are done on site. Photographer Howard Stevens lives in Rocky Point and travels throughout the world capturing people and places with a special eye for composition and color. Natural lighting, environment, subject matter, and being at the right place at the right time all feed into the mix of creating his intriguing images. Not locked into any theme or form, his photographs bring new visions of ordinary subjects to the viewer. A long time resident of Long Island and retired Chairman of the Radio/TV Department at Suffolk County Community College, Howard presents a unique and artistic view of Long Island and the world in this exhibit. Reception Sunday, March 4th, 3 - 5 p.m. |
