MLK Portrait Project Auction Reception

The MLK Portrait Project was inspired by the work of our teacher, Kenneth Jackson. The project was created to engage talented student artists across the East End of Long Island and to honor Martin Luther King Jr. The MLK Portrait Project is a way to celebrate the words of MLK by working together in unity, each creating an individual part, that ultimately becomes a whole. Every panel style is different, yet they all fit together.

Portraits were created on individual 12 x 12 panels with mostly acrylic as a mosaic of images to construct an ultimate image of Martin Luther King Jr. Four different portraits were created in honor of MLK Jr. and each of the portraits contain 16 panels. Every student participant was given a panel or two of the mosaic portrait to create their individual canvas. Most completed portraits are a combination of two high schools. Nine different Long Island high schools participated in the Project.

100% of The MLK Portrait Project Auction proceeds support the EEA's Fine Art Scholarship Fund for children on the East End who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in such art programs.,/b>

Participating high school's included: Rocky Point, Mount Sinai, Greenport, Shelter Island, Riverhead, Southampton, Center Moriches, Eastport-South Manor, & Bridgehampton. In addition to our virtual gallery, portraits will hang in each high school for one week. At the completion of the program, all portraits will be auctioned off to support EEA's scholarship fund for art students in need.
